Eight or so places to eat, one very good general store, and no supermarket for forty miles. Here's how to feed a group here without a wasted trip.

Check the hours. Every time.
The single most common Shelter Cove complaint isn't the food — it's arriving at sunset expecting dinner and finding everything closed. This is a small town with limited staff, and hours shrink in the off season.

Eat earlier than you think. If you're planning to watch the sunset and then find dinner, you have it backwards. Eat first, then go watch the sunset.
Have a backup in the fridge. Even in season, a place can close for a day with no notice. A few provisions at the house means a closed kitchen is an inconvenience, not a crisis.

Where to eat
Small town, genuinely good food. Most of it is within a few minutes of each other on the flats and around Wave Drive.
Gyppo Ale Mill
Bills itself as California's most remote brewery, and it's hard to argue. Ocean views, a heated beer garden, fire pits, and live music on some nights. The default answer to "where should we go tonight."
Delgada Pizza and Bakery
Homemade Italian and pizza made fresh daily, with gluten-free crust available. Also ice cream, beer and wine. The reliable option with a group, and easy to take back to the house.
Mi Mochima
Arepas, empanadas, and tequeños alongside fresh seafood and steaks, in a bright room looking out at the Pacific. The most interesting food in town, and not what anyone expects to find out here.
Mario's Marina Bar
Craft cocktails, small plates, and rotating guest-chef pop-up dinners, right on the marina. Live music nights, dog friendly, and the best sunset drink in Shelter Cove.
Black Sands Bistro
Sweet and savory breakfast plates and lunch sandwiches on house-baked bread, plus coffee and espresso. Opens early — useful if you're heading out to fish or hike.
Surf Point Coffee House
Specialty coffee and a bistro menu that punches well above a town this size — shrimp and grits, breakfast burritos, loaded bagels. Not cheap, and worth it.
Airport Deli and Market
The fish and chips have a local reputation, eaten on the patio looking out at the airstrip, the lighthouse, and the cliffs. Also beer and wine, snacks, souvenirs, fishing licenses, and made-to-order deli sandwiches for the trail or the boat.
Shelter Cove RV Campground & Deli
Grill food — fish and chips, burgers, sandwiches — plus seasonal homemade ice cream, drinks, and campsite supplies. Picnic seating with ocean cliff views.
Service can be slower than you're used to in a city. That's a small community with limited staff, not indifference — build the extra time into your evening and it stops being a problem.
Groceries
The General Store
Nearly forty years old, and far more than a convenience store. This is where the whole town shops, and it's the reason you can cook properly in a rental here.
Every aisle is packed: fresh produce and organic options, dairy, a wall of freezers, a large beer and wine selection, gluten-free items, BBQ essentials. Then the parts that make it a genuine general store — hardware, housewares, automotive, health and beauty, garden supplies, sporting and camping goods.
For anyone here to fish or hike, it also carries fishing tackle and bait, Fish and Wildlife licenses, trail information and maps, and bear canister rentals for the Lost Coast Trail. They sell gas, diesel, propane, and ice too.
You can order groceries ahead. Email your list to [email protected] by 5:30pm for same-day pickup, or call it in. On an arrival day after a long drive over the mountain, this is the single best thing you can do for yourself.

- Gifts and More next door — work by local artists and craftspeople. Shorter hours and closed one day a week, so don't leave souvenirs to your last morning.
Strategy
How to provision a stay
You're renting a house with a real kitchen in a town with limited restaurant hours. Cooking a few nights isn't a compromise here — it's the better plan.
Do a big shop on the way in. Garberville and Redway have full supermarkets, and they're the last ones before the mountain road. Stock the bulk and the awkward items there.
Top up at the General Store. Produce, dairy, beer, and anything you forgot. Prices reflect where you are, and that's the cost of a store existing at all this far out.
Email your order ahead if you're arriving late — same-day pickup takes the pressure off the drive.
Plan one restaurant night and one takeaway night. Delgada travels well and feeds a group without anyone cooking.
Bring your coffee. Or plan a morning at Surf Point or Black Sands Bistro — both open early.
Bring a cooler. If you fish, you'll want it. If you don't, it's still useful for beach days and the drive home.
Don't count on a late-night anything. There is no 24-hour option, no delivery, and no convenience store open at midnight.
The drive matters
The road in from Redway is roughly twenty-four winding miles and takes longer than the mileage suggests. Nobody wants to drive back out for milk — which is the whole argument for the big shop before you descend.
A kitchen worth cooking in
BlackSands has a full kitchen, an outdoor cooking setup, and room to seat everyone — which matters in a town where the restaurants close early.
