Humboldt Redwoods State Park Avenue of Giants

Additional Information

Looking for an unforgettable hiking experience? Shelter Cove is the perfect base camp for some of the best trails in California! One of the must-see day trips from the Cove is a 30-mile drive to Humboldt Redwoods State Park. The famous Avenue of the Giants, a 31-mile stretch of Highway 101, takes you through some of the most impressive Redwoods on the planet. While you can enjoy the beauty from your car window, we recommend taking a hike to truly appreciate the awe-inspiring scenery.

The Eel River flows right through the heart of The Avenue of Giants, providing amazing views and perfect spots to cool off with a refreshing swim.

To get there from Shelter Cove, simply follow Shelter Cove Road for 9.1 miles until it turns into Briceland Road. Then turn left onto Redwood Drive and continue for 1.8 miles until Redwood Drive turns right and becomes Dean Creek Road. From there, turn left to merge onto US-101 N and take exit 645 for Avenue of the Giants/State Route 254 toward Hooker Creek Road/Phillipsville. Merge onto CA-254 N/Avenue of the Giants, and continue north for approximately 30 miles.

For a great loop trip from Shelter Cove, start by stopping at Founders Grove for a 1/2 hike, which is about 20 miles north of where you get on the 101 from the Cove. Then, head west on Matole Road and make a stop at...well, we'll let you decide! Get ready to explore the stunning natural beauty of Northern California.
