One tip is to check on the sunset each day and plan a trip to the water to watch
Here is our day at the beach for 4th of July
Shelter Cove has 2 main beach areas. The first is Black Sands Beach which extends for 20+ miles on the Lost Coast trail and the other is Shelter Cove Beach. This beach is where you launch your boat and is also drivable at low tide.
You will want to know your tides each day while visiting Shelter Cove. There are 2 high / 2 low each 24 hours. This timing determines your visits the tide pools. Negative tides are especially special, as this exposes vast areas of the reef
You don't want to miss the Redwoods on your trip Shelter Cove. Because the drive to Shelter Cove is a windy 20 miles, we would recommend building in a short hike on your arrival or departure day.
Coming from the Bay Area you can stop at the Drive Through tree in Legatt and coming from the North are plenty of stops at Redwood National Park
One of my favorite days was a Father Daughter Date at Shelter Cove!
The best time is during the annual migration of grey whales, from December to April, though whales visit these waters year round. Between May and October you might see blue whales, which can grow to be more than 30 metres long.
This gives you a good perspective of driving through Shelter Cove
Always a fun day at Shelter Cove
Shelter Cove is such a special place to celebrate your families Birthdays!
The winter months can produce some impressive waves. Especially with the large rocks at Blacksands beach, where they explode into a white wall of water. It is always more impressive in person, but this video provides a glimpse. Be careful when the waves are big, as they can quickly sweep you off your feet, if not careful
Kid's love tide pools but always check the tides and swell height. Calm days are the best.
The kids love the beach. You may want to hit big5 for a cheap wetsuits. Although kids impressively push through the cold
Shelter Cove is legendary for fishing. There are a couple charter companies listed on this site.
So many special memories

Welcome to Shelter Cove California, one of our most beloved places in the world! This hidden gem is a true blessing and is still largely unknown to many people in California, including those in the San Francisco Bay Area, despite being only 200 miles to the north. We're excited to provide a guidebook for those interested in learning more about Shelter Cove and all the incredible things this area has to offer.
Located on the Lost Coast, an isolated stretch of Northern California coast, Shelter Cove is a true paradise for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. The King Range towers above the sea to 4,000 feet at its highest point, making it a unique and breathtaking destination that remains largely untouched by development. The rugged terrain makes it difficult and costly to establish roads and infrastructure in the area, leaving it the most undeveloped and remote portion of the California coast.
One of the top things to do in Shelter Cove is to explore the Lost Coast Trail, which starts from here and is considered one of the best beach backpacking trips in the United States. As you hike along the trail, you'll be rewarded with stunning views of the coastline, rocky cliffs, and pristine beaches. The trail is challenging but worth it, and has steadily gained in fame and popularity over the years.
In addition to the Lost Coast Trail, there are plenty of other activities and attractions to explore in Shelter Cove. Whether you're interested in fishing, kayaking, surfing, or simply lounging on the beach, Shelter Cove has something for everyone.
